Rai is back!! We sit down to catch up with each other in an entirely unscripted episode. We meander from topic to topic, but discuss: Bluebeard’s Bride, Exalted Essence testing at Metatopia, Why You Should Never Do a Nuzlocke Run, and What Even is Blaseball Doing Right Now.
Danielle and Monica are back with another deep dive, this time discussing how to lay out and organize core books. We compare two editions of D&D and talk about how it presents information well… and also how it doesn’t.
In the extended cut, we shoot the shit on how we might do this ourselves, and brainstorm a bit about how to present info in a beginner-friendly way.
Also discussed: a pencil and some friends, and for real we can’t stop flirting.
Rai is managing a lot of real life stuff right now, so long-time friend of the show Danielle Lauzon has jumped in as a substitute host. We’re going to do a few-episode series where we delve deep into design topics.
This is the first entry into the series. Monica got to play Bluebeard’s Bride and was very impressed by how its mechanics direct conversation. Monica and Danelle break down gothic horror, beautiful games, and social mechanics.
Also discussed: fat cats, microphone slapping, we can’t stop flirting with each other.
You may have tuned in live for the chaos of this episode. If you missed it, here’s the edited version, for your enjoyment. We brought in Dixie Cochran, in-house developer at Onyx path as well as host of the Onyx Pathcast to discuss the ups and downs of being (or not being) a fan of something you’ve been contracted to work on.
You can hear us on the Pathcast discussing a similar topic here.
Also discussed in the extended cut: the LARP don’t STARP, Exalted: Monica Edition, and passing notes in official game documents.
Monica and Rai are in deadline hell, and Margaret has disappeared again. Rather than leave you without an episode, here’s another Systematic Understanding of Everything episode for you to enjoy while we get ourselves back on track.
So, we know what Exalted is, but where does it take place? Where did Creation come from? What kind of locations does it have? Monica and Chazz take you on a tour of the history of and geography of Creation and some of its more interesting denizens from beastmen to undead kaiju.
Friend of the show Danielle Lauzon returns as a Synthetic Rai Replacement. Together we talk about what to name your game – because a strong title is a reader’s first impression! The usual meandering nonsense happens, and we do a whole bit on “What this title sounds like”
In the extended cut: like 30 extra minutes of us playing a game where we pick an existing title, and then redesign the game based on the impression it gives us.
Wait, you actually emailed us? Like, we asked you to do it, sure, but you… really and truly sent us email??
Today, Monica and Rai address questions and dispense advice as suggested by YOU, the listeners! Monica also gives a breakdown of her experience of GenCon. Please keep in mind: Rai is sick, and both podcasters had one hell of a ADD day, so, uh. We talk about punching dynamite.
Skills are an inevitable part of any game experience, right? You should include a skill for every possible player-character action, right? The answer is “absolutely not, you reprobate.” With this spirit, let’s talk about how skill lists should represent the thesis of your game.
For your consideration: Animal Ken, Use Rope, Brawl and/or Martial Arts, and a hearty bread intermission.
Our dear Margaret had some unexpected family plagues, so today we are bringing you one of our mini-episodes: Monica extolls the virtues of popcorn, and Rai complains about grease and chocolate all over her character sheets. Also mentioned: protean La Croix ooze, how to help your neighbors git gud, and some very polarizing Swedish Fish opinions.
Please look forward to a full episode next Monday, August 16th!
How do you manage your time effectively? How do you keep players on-task? How much planning is TOO much planning? One-Shots: How Do? Lucky for us, Rai specializes in single-episode gaming, and has some suggestions for increasing the danger you pose over short distances. Questions also posed: Does Rai drink carbonated water because she hates us? Have you heard of Microscope? How does brain, when the words can’t and you have to, like, you know?
